⚠️ Per the BACB, your supervisor makes the final determination about how to categorize activities. These are evidence-informed examples. Always consult your BCBA handbook.

Unrestricted Activities (must be at least 60% of total hours)

These are the activities a BCBA performs daily. They involve clinical thinking, analysis, planning, training, and assessment — not direct therapy delivery.

📊 Data Analysis & GraphingGraphing client data, writing visual analysis notes, identifying trends and making programming decisions.
📝 Behavior Plan WritingDrafting or revising BSPs, intervention plans, and ABA programming documents for clients.
🔍 Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)Conducting indirect (interviews, rating scales) and direct (ABC observation) FBAs. Writing FBA reports.
🧪 Functional Analysis DesignPlanning, reviewing, or observing functional analyses. Designing conditions and analyzing outcomes.
🎯 Preference AssessmentsRunning MSWO, paired stimulus, free operant preference assessments and analyzing results.
👩‍🏫 Staff TrainingTraining RBTs or other staff on new programs, data collection, or behavior plans. Training in performance of specific skills.
👨‍👩‍👧 Caregiver/Parent TrainingProviding ABA-based training to families, school staff, or other caregivers.
📋 Skill AssessmentsAdministering VB-MAPP, ABLLS-R, AFLS, Vineland or other ABA skill assessments.

🖥️ Telehealth SupervisionParticipating in remote supervision with your BCBA, discussing cases, reviewing data.
📁 Report WritingWriting progress notes, annual reviews, or authorization reports tied to behavior-analytic assessment and programming.

🔶 Restricted Activities (maximum 40% of total hours)

These involve directly delivering therapeutic or instructional procedures to a client — the "hands-on" sessions. They're valuable but capped to ensure you develop higher-level clinical skills.

🤝 Direct Therapy DeliveryRunning ABA therapy sessions directly with clients — DTT, NET, pivotal response, etc.
📏 Data Collection During SessionsCollecting trial-by-trial or frequency data while delivering programming (as opposed to for assessment purposes).
🛡️ Behavior Intervention ImplementationImplementing extinction, differential reinforcement, or other behavior intervention plans directly with a client.
📖 Skill Instruction ProgramsRunning discrete trial training, incidental teaching, or naturalistic teaching with a client.

🚫 Unacceptable / Non-Countable Activities

These cannot count toward your fieldwork hours at all, no matter how much time you spend on them.

Professional ConferencesAttending CEUs, workshops, or university classes — even ABA-related ones. These count toward CE, not fieldwork.
Coursework AssignmentsHomework, readings, and class projects from your graduate program.
Non-ABA Staff MeetingsAdministrative or organizational meetings with no behavior-analytic content.
Billing & SchedulingAdministrative paperwork, insurance documentation, scheduling clients.
CPR / Crisis TrainingNon-ABA trainings like CPR, safety care, or building-specific crisis systems.

Group Activity
🎲

ABA Jeopardy

Build a Jeopardy-style game with TCO categories (Reinforcement, Measurement, Ethics, etc.). Play in group supervision. Great for reviewing before exams.

Solo
🎬

Find Behavior in a Movie

Watch a short film clip and identify reinforcement contingencies, extinction, verbal operants, and motivating operations. Write a 1-page analysis.

Group Activity
🎭

Supervision Role Plays

Role-play giving constructive feedback to an "RBT" (played by a peer). Practice using Behavior Skills Training (model-lead-test) format.

Written
📰

ABA Case Study Journal

Write a monthly one-page journal entry on one client's progress, including data analysis, programming decisions, and what you'd do differently.

🔎

Ethics Scenario Detective

Review anonymized ethical dilemma scenarios. Identify the BACB Ethics Code section that applies and write your recommended course of action.

Group Activity
🏆

Data Graphing Challenge

Race to build the most accurate and interpretable graph from a dataset. Teams present their visual analysis. The supervisor judges on accuracy and clarity.

🧠

Teach-Back Teaching

Assign a TCO item to the trainee. They prepare a 5-minute "micro-lesson" to teach it back to the supervisor or group as if training a new RBT.

Given a hypothetical client's ABC data, design a functional analysis. Specify conditions, dependent variable, session length, and predicted function.

Group Activity
🗺️

ABA Concept Mind Map

As a group, create a visual mind map connecting all TCO sections. Use color coding to show how concepts relate. Great for visual learners!

Written
📊

Research Article Breakdown

Read a published ABA study, identify the design, dependent variable, IOA, baseline logic, and social validity. Write a one-page critique.

Group Activity
🤝

Parent Training Practice

Role-play a parent training session on a skill (e.g., how to run a DTT trial). Peer gives feedback on clarity, empathy, and ABA accuracy.

🖊️

Behavior Plan Write-Off

Given a function (e.g., escape-maintained aggression), write a full BSP independently. Supervisor scores using a rubric and provides written feedback.
